The cilice chain, a term derived from the Latin 'cilicium ' (haircloth), has a rich historical significance. It's a device worn on the body as an instrument of penance, with its wires cut to a 45-degree angle—sharp enough to irritate the flesh as you move but not sharp enough to cut. This chain has been a part of religious communities for centuries, and in a more contemporary context, it has been associated with cults such as Opus Dei and the NXIVM cult. 
I decided to enlarge the size of the cilice; my chain is eight feet long and three feet wide. In an impractical size for the body, a sheet of steel is placed under the chain to give sound to the object, which is symbolic of the voice of those who serve penance. Its scale and sound contrast the silencing implications of the tool, as its perception is one of oppression. 
The sculpture, placed on the floor, establishes a hierarchy between the viewer and the object. A motion detector is placed to activate the linear actuator, which moves the chain back and forth, mimicking its movement on the body. This interactive element invites the viewer to question their role in this dynamic, stimulating a deeper engagement with the piece.
