CASSANDRA’S POOL
Metal, Silicone, Water

My first welding project involved shaping sheet metal into a vessel that could hold water. The water sat in the steel structure creating rust.

The title is inspired by Anne Carson’s Cassandra Float Can, in which Carson says “for a dime she will tell you the pool is full of blood” referring to the prophet Cassandra in Greek mythology. My sculpture began to leak, which I equated to the idea of bleeding out. As if the materials became their own prophet, the slow decay leading to an inevitable demise.
